Erasmus+ Regional TAM Seminar on "Strategies for HEIs: Excelling in QS and THE International Rankings"

On September 19-20, 2024, the Regional Erasmus+ TAM Seminar on "Strategies for HEIs: Excelling in QS and THE International Rankings" was organized at Alisher Navo’i Tashkent State University of Uzbek Language and Literature. The seminar focused on strategies for higher education institutions to excel in QS and THE international rankings and featured renowned international expert Ellen Hazelkorn.

The event was inaugurated with speeches from key figures in the higher education sector, including Diyor Umarov, Head of International Cooperation and Ranking Division, Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Aziza Abdurakhmanova, Head of the National Erasmus+ Office in Uzbekistan. Their addresses set the tone for a seminar aimed at fostering academic excellence and international recognition for Uzbekistan’s universities.

A highlight of the seminar was the presentation by renowned higher education expert Professor Ellen Hazelkorn. As a consultant for BH Associates, Honorary Professor at Dublin, and a member of several influential international advisory boards, including the European Union’s Smart Specialisation (HESS) higher education advisory group, Professor Hazelkorn shared her deep expertise on the intricacies of international university rankings. Her insights focused on the relevance of these rankings and the quality benchmarks that define success in the global higher education system.

During the practical sessions, Professor Hazelkorn delved into the methodologies and criteria of major ranking systems such as QS, THE, and ARWU, providing participants with a clear understanding of their benefits and potential challenges. Her analysis emphasized how rankings can be used strategically to enhance both the quality and performance of Uzbekistan’s higher education institutions, offering invaluable recommendations tailored to the country’s educational context.

This seminar was part of the European Union’s Technical Assistance Missions (TAM), which are designed to support higher education reform experts (HERE) with tailored, hands-on guidance. TAM uses a variety of formats, including national seminars, conferences, and focus groups, to provide the necessary tools and strategies for improving higher education systems.
